The Pay Gap for Illiterates

Having trouble explaining the well-documented gender pay gap to someone who can’t quite see it? Show him (or her) the picture.

In the department of Bureaucrats Having Fun comes this chart, which illustrates the gender pay gap by industry. This is a nifty way of breaking down the sometimes-murky gender pay gap issue. It is common for skeptics to dismiss the gap as the result of women’s lifestyle choices (as though any women chooses to not support her family) because this chart illustrates the wage difference of full-time workers.

We see that though there are few women in mining, they almost make as much as men in mining. At the other end of the scale, there are lots of women employed in hospitality and agriculture, but they make much less than their male counterparts. By the way, the Bureau of Labor Statistics calculated that for 2009, women who worked full time in wage and salary jobs had median weekly earnings of $657, which is 80 percent of men’s median weekly earnings ($819).
